What does the average UK workplace actually score?

Most business owners have a sense of what it’s like to work for them. Fewer have a number that proves it, and almost none know how that number stacks up against everyone else.

We can now answer that second question. Here’s what the data says.

The UK average

Across UK employers measured so far, the average HELM Culture Score is 80.5. That’s the starting point for every comparison in this post: not a pass mark, not a target, simply where the average business currently sits.

The real story sits in the detail behind that number, sector by sector.

Where it’s working well

The strongest-performing sector we’ve measured is Information and Communication, averaging 90.1. Businesses here tend to have staff who feel treated fairly, and who are proud to tell other people where they work. Those two things reinforce each other: fair treatment builds the kind of trust that turns into genuine advocacy.

Where there’s more room to grow

Administrative and Support Service Activities currently averages 75.9, the widest opportunity for improvement of the sectors we’ve measured. Staff trust and advocacy tend to move together here, so lifting one is likely to lift the other.

Why the gap is worth paying attention to

A fourteen-point gap between the strongest and most improvable sectors is a genuine difference in what it’s like to turn up to work. Two businesses of a similar size, in a similar market, can be having a completely different experience internally, and a score is the clearest way to see which one you’re closer to.

Where do you sit?

You now know where the UK average sits, and where the strongest sector currently leads. What’s still open is where your own business falls on that scale, and that’s exactly what HELM Culture Score is built to show you.
